Shrewsbury Select Board Backs $3.7 Million Grant Bid for Route 20 Traffic Signal

SHREWSBURY — May 26, 2026 — Shrewsbury Select Board authorizes $3.7 million state grant application for a Route 20 traffic signal. The board voted unanimously at its May 26 meeting to allow Town Manager Kevin Mizekar to submit a $3,677,629 Community One Stop for Growth application in partnership with developer GoVenture Capital Group for a traffic signal at the intersection of Hartford Turnpike and Stony Hill Road. Member Greg Richards pressed on what happens if the application fails, noting that awards of that size appear limited to one or two annually statewide, and cited the developer's own letter warning that current traffic conditions are "challenging today" and pose risks to the project's "long-term success." GoVenture representative Tom Corbett told the board the developer has funds available to partially or fully cover signalization costs if the grant is not awarded, and said signalization is "the direction we need to go regardless" if MassDOT conversations prove fruitful. The intersection carries roughly 19,000 vehicles per day but has never triggered the traffic warrant threshold required for a signal installation. Grant awards are expected in October 2026.
