School Committee · Meeting of September 9, 2026
Shrewsbury High School is 55 percent over its modern state-rated capacity, officials told the School Committee Wednesday. Assistant Superintendent Chris Girardi said the Massachusetts School Building Authority's 10-year enrollment baseline of 1,940 students, against a current design capacity of just 1,250, drove the district's selection as one of 22 projects statewide invited into MSBA's eligibility pipeline. Town Meeting has appropriated $3 million for a feasibility study, with the town's net cost estimated near $1.4 million thanks to a 52.26 percent state reimbursement rate; any building vote is at least a year away, no earlier than fall 2027.
Separately, the committee unanimously accepted just over $2.5 million in FY27 grants, down almost 6 percent from FY26, and heard a proposed Sherwood Middle School "Beyond the Bell" drop-in care pilot, with new fees of $35 to $60 a day, headed to a vote September 23.
