Housing Authority Hears Elizabeth Street Objections

Other Committee 2026-09-16 Part 2 · Meeting of September 16, 2026

Shrewsbury Housing Authority tells Elizabeth Street abutters no design is set, but something will be built there. Neighbor Chris Nichol told the board she and her husband learned of the wooded parcel's development potential only through a February newspaper article, calling it unfair to abutters: "nobody in the neighborhood wants this." Board members said a February article's suggestion the authority would lease the land to a developer was inaccurate and pointed to a prior five-unit Ridgeland Road project as a possible model. Separately, the board approved a $210,538 landlord check register and a $125,769.16 general check register, and flagged a new $11,500 annual state legal-services allocation as likely inadequate, with one member asking, "Who wants to charge a dollar an hour?" Staff reported 29,224 applicants on the regional state waiting list and said federal housing moves faster than the years-long state queue.
