Shrewsbury's Select Board voted 3-2 against developing a welcoming community policy recommended by the town's Diversity, Equity, Inclusion and Belonging Committee.
Select Board · Meeting of August 25, 2026
Shrewsbury's Select Board voted 3-2 against developing a welcoming community policy recommended by the town's Diversity, Equity, Inclusion and Belonging Committee. Members Michelle Conlon and Carlos Garcia voted yes; Chair Teresa Flynn, Greg Richards and a member identified as Mr. Sharma voted no, citing the newly enacted state Protect Act as sufficient protection.
Garcia called the vote a missed chance to "stand up for our immigrants here in town," while Richards said a local policy "doesn't really change anything operationally." Town Manager Kevin Mizekar confirmed no town department has ever asked a resident's immigration status. Separately, the board unanimously approved transferring the Pharmacannis Massachusetts host community agreement at 939 Boston Turnpike to new owner Meredith Moghimi's Milu Shrewsbury LLC, and heard that fiscal year 2026 local receipts hit $19,875,826, exceeding budget by roughly $2.6 million, with free cash projected near $9,654,603 pending state certification.
