Shrewsbury Housing Authority Backs Bill to Expand Preservation Funds for Maintenance

SHREWSBURY — April 15, 2026 — Shrewsbury Housing Authority votes to support Senate Bill 955 and approves a $1,276 bonus for its executive director. The board voted unanimously at its April 15 meeting to send letters to state Senator Moore and state Representative Cain urging support for S.955, which would allow Community Preservation Act funds to be used for housing authority maintenance — a use currently prohibited under state law. Executive Director Kelly Bergeron, who flagged the bill after attending a State House event Monday, also noted a separate pet-friendly housing bill that could force the authority to scrap its existing 25-pound weight limit on pets. The board approved routine financial items totaling more than $278,000, including 47 general checks worth $83,504.91 and Section 8 payments of $188,876. On the authority's longer-horizon Elizabeth Street development — a conceptual plan for 11 affordable duplexes on vacant land — the board said it is still waiting for Mass Housing Partnership to assign a consultant under a $30,000 grant commitment, with an expected timeline of late April to early May.
