Board approves solar array variance; mixed results on sign and commercial permits.

Shrewsbury Zoning Board grants solar array variance with minimal opposition. Maribeth Lynch chaired the meeting as the Board unanimously approved a 1.3-kilowatt solar array 1.4 feet from Praveen Kosaraju's building at 600 South Street, where 10 feet is required, after Kosaraju demonstrated moving it to code would place it in afternoon shade and significantly reduce output. In a split decision, the Board voted 3-2 to approve a variance for David Hemming's McGovern sign at 420 Boston Turnpike, with Chair Lynch and Ann Refolo dissenting over visual cohesion concerns with an existing Floor and Decor pylon sign on the same parcel.
The Board also granted variances for a modular home setback discrepancy at 201 North Quinsigamond Avenue and a family room addition at 27 North Street; granted two variances for pre-existing non-conforming structures (shed and pergola) at 101 Grove Street; and continued a two-special-permit application for a Chase Bank branch at 103 Boston Turnpike to April 27 after an abutter raised concerns about drainage and property access.
